Groundhog Moonlight 1/6th Marathon #racereport

So, Saturday night's Groundhog Day Eve Moonlight 1/6th Marathon will go down in history as one of the stupidest (read CRAZIEST) things I have ever done.  West Michigan has been in the midst of a polar vortex snowpocalypse for several weeks now and this trail race was going to be hard.

I had no idea how hard or I was just in total denial.  I think I ran about 5 miles the entire month of January and was still nursing some injuries.  I ran the Groundhog Half Marathon last year and while there was a sh*tload of snow that day too, It was pretty packed down.  I figured, 4.4 miles, I could walk it if I didn't feel up to running.

Thankfully, we ended up with a bit of a heat wave this past weekend so I didn't need to deal with the -11 windchills.  It was about 27 degrees with very little wind at the 6:30 pm race time.  I was outfitted in 2 pair of tights, a long sleeve tech shirt, my Nike Element jacket, hat and a buff. I wore Yak Trax on my feet but honestly, it probably wouldn't have mattered if I'd decided to wear my Uggs.  I left my mittens in the car, which was perfect because my hands were uncovered 1/2 a mile in.  I'd say I was dressed perfectly.  I never felt cold.  Sadly, this was the only "perfect" aspect of this "race".

I was extremely fortunate to go through this torture race with Laura, Susan and Judi.  Had they not been there, I'm pretty sure you all would be reading my obit instead of a race report because I was giving serious thought to jumping in the Grand River and attempting to swim back to town.

The only plowed section of the trail was the start/finish like.  For those doing the half or full on Sunday, they'd cross this area every loop - 3 loops for the half, 6 for the full.  We only had to deal with it once.

The Groundhog Moonlight 1/6th Marathon race is a 4.4 mile loop through the beautiful Kent Trails system in Grand Rapids, MI.  Headlamps were required and it really was quite pretty when I was brave enough to look up instead of just down at my feet.  I truly believe the 1/6th-er's job is to blaze the trail and hopefully get the snow packed down for the next morning's half and full marathon.  We really didn't do a very good job.

The snow was easily 18 inches deep and full of ruts and pits.  I have never been so frustrated just trying to WALK.  Forget about any attempts to run.  There was a spot about 1/2 to 1 mile in that runners could bail if they wanted.  Once we passed that point we knew we were in for the VERY long haul.  I give mad props to Susan for blazing our trail, Laura for running her longest race so far, and Judi for falling half a dozen times, not giving up and making us laugh.  I give myself props for packing peppermint schnapps and not just laying down in the snow waiting to die.  When I mentioned swimming, I was about 50% serious and trying to calculate how long I'd live before I either drowned or hypothermia set it.  It became a mind over matter race.  I needed to not mind that the time didn't matter.  It was so f*cking hard and I thought about 100 times that I would be lucky to get out without a broken ankle.  I'm proud to say I never fell and I actually ran the last 25 yards or so to the finish line. I can run 4.4 miles in about 45 minutes or less and walk that distance in a little over an hour.  This "race" took me over 2 FREAKING HOURS! The winner finished in 50 minutes, so that gives you and indication of how bad the conditions were since that dude probably runs 5 min miles and couldn't even maintain a 10 m/m pace.  A couple of my friends placed in their age-groups.  Mandy finished in about 1:40 and Joanne in around 1:30.  I really thought I'd be done in under 90 minutes but I seriously underestimated this.  Sunday morning I woke up feeling like I'd been run over by a snowplow.  Pretty much everything hurts, from my neck for looking down for 2+ hours to a very sore hammy to my feet and ankles.

Saturday night's run will go down as both my Personal Worst and Personal Best 1/6th marathon.  I will NEVER do this race again, so both of those records will stand.

Photo: Seemed like a good idea at the time

At least the sweatshirt rocked.

Fitness Friday: race registration karma?

It seems the universe is conspiring against me in my quest to start signing up for races. (Even though I'm not currently running - I'm getting antsy.)

I've tried for 2 days in a row to register for the Fifth Third River Bank Run 25k Relay.
Fifth Third River Bank Run

Both days something went wrong - either I couldn't connect to the site at all or the coupon code I was given for unknowingly becoming their postcard image didn't work.

I figured I could register for this one since I should be fine to run by May.  I hope the running God's aren't trying to tell me something because I'm really excited about this race now since I get to run the relay with Corey so I HAVE TO BE ABLE TO REGISTER!

Since I had it in my head to register for SOMETHING today, I decided to go for this one instead.

Don't worry, I'm not running a marathon in 3 weeks, or even a half marathon.  I'm going to run the 1/6th Moonlight Marathon the night before.  I figure even broken I can walk 4.4 miles but hopefully I'll be able to at least run most of it or I'm going to freeze my ass off.

Groundhog Day Half Marathon: race report!

On Saturday, I ran my first trail half marathon.  In a blizzard.  It was epic :)  The whole goal of the day was to have fun and not break anything.  Fun was had.  Jury is still out on whether anything is broken.  KIDDING!  Well, sorta. But I'll be fine.

This is a very photo-heavy post and I figure I'll let the pictures speak for themselves with a little captioning because I can't not say anything.

We had a good 12+ inches of fresh powder and the snow was still coming down at 7 am when I met up with my friends at the parking area.

I was Miss Sunshine and Jenny was 6 More Weeks of Winter.  We also had 2 groundhogs, The Mayor, a weatherman, spring, and a couple of shadows.

With our costumes, we managed to win "Best Group Costume" and each of us got a free Groundhog Marathon hat!

Snowy start/finish/turnaround line.  The course was a 4.4 mile loop throughout Kent Trails.  We were able to run through a couple deep groves created by the faster runners, but it was in no way plowed.  I'd also forgotten about the little hills back there.  The half marathoners made 3 loops and the crazy full marathon folks did 6.

This is probably one of my favorite race photos of all time!

I love these people.  Nuff said.

You have to appreciate the beauty that is West Michigan during a snow storm.  The ice flowing down the Grand River was pretty amazing.

Chasing Groundhog Jenn :)

About 1/2 way and still smiling!  I love how relaxed we were.  No stress about pace, running or walking, just a group of friends having fun in the snow.  Also, having so many runners say, "Hello, Sunshine!" to me as we passed each other was very fun.

Aren't we cute!

The sun (well, besides Miss Sunshine) finally made an appearance!

The bridges were hard to run on - this wasn't one of them, though. It was just pretty.

Judi, Jenn and I stopped around mile 9 or 10 for a little warm up ;)  These two ran and walked with me the entire race.  I couldn't ask for better friends.

Happy to almost be done

Look close and you can see the cardinal that kept us company on part of loop 3.

I don't think I've ever smiled during a race as much as I smiled during this one.

Happy Bling Whore!

I was really stressing about how slow I was going to need to run this race, but in the end, it really didn't matter.  We ran the first lap in about 59 min and then realized on the 2nd lap that it was just more fun to walk and throw in a little running here and there.  The 2nd and 3rd laps took 1:14 and 1:15.  We stopped and socialized at aid stations.  We took pictures.  We had fun.  I can honestly say this was one half that I smiled on the entire time.  It wasn't easy by any stretch, but it was fun and I had a great time.

I set a PR in fun :)

Got some pretty sweet swag, too!

Thankful Thursday: Winter Runs

Today I'm giving thanks that I own YakTrax. As much as I hate them, I'm going to need them this weekend. This was the scene from my driveway this morning:

And this is what's predicted by tomorrow night - yep, I'm right on that line between 4-8" and 8-12":

Hopefully the YakTrax don't clash too much with my skirt.  On the bright side, if I fall into a snow bank, with the amount of orange and yellow I'm wearing and the fact the course is a series of loops, someone should find me before I turn into a Bari-sicle.

Recap next week if I survive.

Anyone else running or racing this weekend?

Happy New Year 2020
