Confessions: health check

Typically, Tuesday is the day I air all my dirty food porn from the previous week. I'm not going to do that today.

Instead, I'm going to give you all a gentle nudge to make sure you are keeping tabs on your overall health. Today was my annual physical and it seemed like a good excuse to remind you all to schedule your next check-up.

So, how did my check-up go? I'm in excellent health. My weight was down 5 lbs from last year & well within the acceptable range for my height. My blood pressure was 111/68 - also excellent. I didn't need any blood work this year.

My doctor's only complaint? I need more calcium. I got quite the lecture, actually. You see, I don't really like to drink milk (I will put it on cereal but don't drink the "dregs" as we call them in my house), I'll eat Greek yogurt (yum Chobani) on occasion, and rarely eat cheese. I eat some calcium-rich veggies, but not often enough. Definitely not getting the 1000mg of calcium recommended. (Now, if I could get that amount in calorie-free Butter Pecan ice cream, I'd be all set!) FYI-Not only is calcium needed, but vitamin D is required to transport the calcium to where it needs to go.

Bottom line? I'll be looking for a calcium/vitamin D supplement, because I know I won't get these nutrients in my food. Also, as a runner, I'm at greater risk of fractures if I become calcium deficient.

Also, while I'm on this check-up kick, I'll let you know I have my annual mammogram scheduled for later this week. Ladies, if you are over 40 - get this done. If you think you can't afford it or don't have insurance, ask about grants in your area. Many states provide free mammograms to women without insurance coverage. Protect your girls. Save 2nd base.

Ok, soap box over. I love my readers & want to make sure you are all taking care of yourselves. Thank you for listening.

So, how do you make sure you get enough calcium & vitamin D?
